I am an over-60, sailor, psychologist with a passion for exploring the benefits of our natural world - inside and out, on land and sea. Raised summers along the shallows of Vineyard Sound in Cape Cod, I worked my way up from sunfish to sloop to 108 ft. topsail schooner. In my younger days, I explored extensively throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. My best buddy, black lab and I traveled for a year coast to coast across the United States in our 1971 VW Camper "Bessie." I continue to sail local waters in my catboat "Selkie" and take annual expeditions along coastal Maine and Nova Scotia. For over 25 years, I have provided psychological support and health education to folks recovering after medical illness and injury...those who really know what it means to face of late-life storms.
I am absolutely certain of two things: 1. I have much more to learn about navigating a well-lived life and 2. I don't know what lays over the horizon. My passion for being in nature and aging well comes out of the reality that life is way too short and very precious. Everyday, I am honored to hear stories of the trials and tribulations of those recovering from major medical illnesses including stroke, cancer, and heart disease . As an older father with daughters ages 24, 18 and 8, I hope to live as healthy and long as possible to teach my girls and other folks about living well along the way.
Given that I have had my share of shipwrecks - of personal failings and regrets - I endeavor to learn from these mishaps and pursue my late-life adventure with a clear mind and open heart. Here are my MUSTS:
1. I MUST focus on family first. This adventure will not take away from my primary attention to my precious wife and three lovely daughters.
2. I MUST navigate this next journey with authenticity and do my best to quiet the inner critic and outside
neigh-sayers.
3. I MUST remember to play and laugh and sing and dance along the way...to savor the fleeting moments of this life.
You are welcome to come aboard, follow along and share your own experiences of living well in the later seasons of life. Please do not hesitate to contact me or comment at: drjohnsallen@gmail.com
